'https:\/\/ssl' : 'http:\/\/www') + '.google-analytics.com\/ga.js'; \u00a0 \u00a0 var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(ga, s); \u00a0 })();  <\/script>  <\/heat>Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Background \u2013 The Rejection at Nazareth<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Once again the notes provided for Mk. 6:1 \u2013 6 are helpful, <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/mark\/6\">http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/mark\/6<\/a> <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">As should be clear, the church during this year is asking us to focus on the Gospel according to Mark, the first written gospel and probably the source of the very word gospel.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">If we look at the headings from Chaps. 4 and 5, we can put this passage into its Marcan context. Ch. 4 relates 3 parables in which the Marcan Jesus invites us to understand the meaning of the Kingdom of God in the parables of the<strong> Sower<\/strong>, of the <strong>Lamp,<\/strong> and of the <strong>Mustard Seed<\/strong>. \u00a0Mark concludes this chapter in dramatic fashion telling of the mighty act of Jesus&#8217; <strong>Calming of a Storm at Sea<\/strong>. \u00a0In Ch. 5 he continues to reveal the mighty acts of Jesus in the <strong>Healing of the Gerasene<\/strong>, the <strong>Raising of the daughter of Jairus<\/strong> from death to life and the <strong>Curing of the Woman with a Hemorrhage<\/strong>. \u00a0All of this ends in Nazareth! \u00a0The very context conveys a meaning that could easy be missed if we are attentive only to the selected reading.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In this passage we also get a glimpse of the early church&#8217;s memory in part of Jesus&#8217; life in Nazareth which tradition has added to in ways that capture our imagination. \u00a0There is a truth here that transcends history and to root these developing traditions in history is both to do an injustice to the purpose of the Gospel and perhaps to miss both the Gospel and the tradition&#8217;s deeper meaning.<\/p>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Our Questions<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Our three basic questions can are meant to focus our reading \/ hearing. First who are the characters in this passage? By now we know that the \u201cwhen\u201d is complex and matters; there is the \u201cwhen\u201d of the story, the \u201cwhen\u201d of the author and his intended community, and our \u201cwhen\u201d of the 21<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><sup><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">st<\/span><\/span><\/sup><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> century, in our global world, in our nation, in our community, in our personal life. Ultimately, unless we attend to our \u201cwhen\u201d the good news [Gospel] remains an abstraction, and the light we think it shines more often than not is a continuance of our darkness. Finally, we are confronted by the question, what is the plot, the theme, the purpose of this passage.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><a name=\"49005020\"><\/a><a name=\"49005021\"><\/a> The Reading \u2013 <em>The Rejection at Nazareth [Mk. 6:1 &#8211; 6]\u00a0<\/em><\/h3>\n<p><a name=\"49006001\"><\/a> <span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>1<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">He departed from there and came to his native place,<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">accompanied by his disciples.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"49006002\"><\/a> <span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>2<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">When the sabbath came he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astonished. They said, \u201cWhere did this man get all this? What kind of wisdom has been given him? What mighty deeds are wrought by his hands!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"49006003\"><\/a> <span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>3<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Is he not the carpenter,<\/span><\/span><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/mark\/6#49006003-1\"><span style=\"color: #008061;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>*<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #333333;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">the son of Mary, and the brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?\u201d And they took offense at him.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"49006004\"><\/a> <span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>4<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Jesus said to them, \u201cA prophet is not without honor except in his native place and among his own kin and in his own house.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"49006005\"><\/a><a name=\"49006006\"><\/a> <span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>5 <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">So he was not able to perform any mighty deed there,<\/span><\/span><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/mark\/6#49006005-1\"><span style=\"color: #008061;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>*<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #333333;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">apart from curing a few sick people by laying his hands on them. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>6 <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">He was amazed at their lack of faith.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Your responses, questions, and \/ or comments are welcomed.
